Forklift Training Course Service

In today's commercial world, the forklift truck is a powerful work tool. Without it, everyday life would be more cumbersome, everything would cost more as industry and services would become inefficient and very expensive.

There are however a number of serious risks involved with Forklift operations.

The most common types of incidents involving forklift trucks are:

  • Struck by a moving truck
  • Struck by a load falling from the truck
  • Overturn of the truck
  • Fall from a height
  • Trapped between the mast and overhead guard

Less common incidents and subsequent injuries include

  • Fire or explosion
  • Unsuitability of the lift truck to the environment.

Pedestrians are at risk, just as much as drivers but their injuries tend to be crush or foot injuries whilst driver injuries tend to be as a result of forklift truck instability which can result in the forklift turning ove .

Forklift trucks come in a variety of size and specifications and are capable of lifting such diverse items as a fully loaded ISO 40 foot cargo container weighing in excess of 20 metric tonnes to a single case of paper plates. They can be battery, gas or electrically operated. They can move enormous quantities with great speed, efficiency and deal with complex logistical situations within a short time.

However, in the hands of an untrained or poorly trained member of staff, the forklift can become a lethal weapon, capable of causing death and injury to staff, customers and members of the public. They can cause untold damage to property and stock. These dangers have been clearly recognised by those involved in the development and practice of Health and Safety legislation and it is now a legal requirement in Ireland, for all users of forklift trucks to hold current and valid certification, proving that they have been trained in the use of such machinery.

Forklift Training Courses are an important control for forklift operators however in terms of the hierarchy of controls the management of risks should also and equally prioritise the safety of the Forklift and this includes the following.

  • Ensuring the forklift is operated in the correct environment.
  • Ensuring that the forklift is suitable for the tasks required.
  • Ensuring that the forklift is serviced, maintained and operated in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
